Avis Blackthorn The Map of Infinity The Wizard Magic School Series Book 3 eBook Jack Simmonds
The author has/had a tiger by the tail with this installment; definitely the best of the series so far. Unfortunately, I have read Jack Simmonds has stepped away from the series so will not be writing anymore installments in the foreseeable future; which irritates me to no end. Perhaps it's OCD, or past experiences with uncompleted series, but one of my biggest pet peeves is any series type that has a set size/sequence/etc. where a creator pulls you in and gets you interested and then stops in the middle. With each book/installment in this series (3 books and a prequel) the writing and details have improved and been more engaging, enticing the reader to look forward to when the next is published; hopefully the author reconsiders not writing any more of Avis' adventures (at least until after Avis has left school, lol). To be honest, I will probably avoid purchasing any other books by this author that seem like they are part or could be part of another series that is not already complete (incomplete series/podcasts/etc. REALLY bothers me).Not a standalone book as each book/prequel builds upon it's predecessor; but an excellent series for those not bothered by incompleteness/interruption ...

Avis Blackthorn The Map of Infinity The Wizard Magic School Series Book 3 eBook Jack Simmonds Reviews
Avis third year at Hailing Hall will forever be remembered. After returning home for the summer, Avis is blamed for his sister's failed marriage, as the Djinn he set free got involved. He is no longer given the option of not being evil and forced to join a raid which he successfully ruins by just being himself. He is banished to the dungeons of the castle as punishment and escapes in a extraordinary way. At school he is under constant attack from some new students, and a trusted friend. Avis learns some great new magic that allows him to stay alive even though the escape almost is the end of his known existence. He and several friends are coerced to several things they would not do. Jack Simmonds tells an excellent tell that will keep you entranced from the start to finish.
I must once again give my compliments to the Avis Blackthorn series. This newest addition to the series is both entertaining and exciting! I especially loved the ending to this thrilling book! Any readers looking for a new series to read should definitely read the Avis Blackthorn series!
Ok, I have to disagree with most other reviewers. To me, this series did not improve; but went downhill after the first book. The first book was excellant, the second was very good, and this one had problems. I still like Avis, but the writing was the problem.
Memo to authors Do not put your personal political opinions in a book UNLESS they are an integral part of the storyline. In the case of this book, it was not an intergral part, just added because the author wanted to express them.
The biggest fault in the book was that it kept jumping around with no attempt to transition. I kept having to go back and re-read thinking that I had missed something. This confusion prevents the reader from being able to imerse themself in the book.
The last part of the book was very good, much in the style of the first book. The book almost seemed like different authors had written different parts of the book.
These books get better with each release! Avis is growing up, his circle of friends widen, and his abilities start to mature. He is beginning to be a more proficient speller, too, thank goodness!
Jack Simmonds, author of this series, has written a deeper and more challenging story as Avis ages a year in each book. It is subtly done, but becomes quite apparent in this current book. I am impressed by this, as my first reading of the first book annoyed me to no end. My first copy of the book did not have the warning page, written by Avis apologizing for any mistakes he made in his writing of his journal. On a second read-through, the page was there. (One of those updating magical things books do.) Then, the misspelled words made a lot more sense to me! Simmonds has also added new spellings for words that mean the same thing in the magical world and the "Outside" world, but the new spelling denotes its' use in only the magical world. It's quite a clever tool. Watch for them when you read; I enjoyed them.
For me, this is the best yet. It's a fun and intriguing read. I am always trying to guess the end, but have failed every time. Give this series a go! Reading in order is recommended as this is a different magical world than portrayed by other writers. That is the fun in reading magical-themed books; each author can make their own magical worlds, rules, and characters. This series has grown on me! I read the prequel through the next two out of curiosity, this one because I wanted to for its' own sake, and I will get the next one because I want more! I like Simmonds' magical world, Avis, and his friends! Give it a chance; betcha you'll fall for them, too!
Unlimited, think it might be permafree. Avis Blackthorn and the Ring of Enchantment (An Avis Blackthorn Magical Adventure, Prequel Book 0), Avis Blackthorn Is Not an Evil Wizard! (The Wizard Magic School Series, Book 1), Avis Blackthorn and the Magical Multicolour Jumper (The Wizard Magic School Series, Book 2) Avis Blackthorn The Map of Infinity (The Wizard Magic School Series, Book 3) which just went thru thanks to freebie and took longer to show up on than goodreads for a change.
I know some think that it is reminiscent of Harry Potter, but to quote Agatha Christie/Hercule Poirot, there is nothing new under the sun...and I enjoy reading Simmonds, so for me, as always, it is 5 stars.
